An overflow that is clean water from the tank is one thing. An overflow that comes up from the drain is another, and it needs to be treated as contaminated from the start.
The IICRC sorts water into categories, and toilet backups usually fall into the gray or black water range that carries bacteria. That classification changes everything: which materials can be dried and saved, and which have to be removed and replaced for the space to be safe again. We also handle related bathroom water damage restoration when a supply line or shutoff is the real source.
Porous materials soak up dirty water quickly. Grout lines, the subfloor, the drywall behind the vanity, and the cabinet toe-kick all pull it in within hours. The longer contaminated water sits, the more of the bathroom has to come out instead of being cleaned in place, and standing gray or black water is a breeding ground for bacteria you do not want under the floor.
Behind the vanity, under the flooring, and in the wall base are the spots an overflow reaches first.

We remove the standing water, then clean and disinfect every surface the overflow reached. Contaminated porous materials that cannot be safely restored are bagged and removed, and the structure underneath is dried with air movers and dehumidifiers until moisture readings are back to normal.
Once it is dry and sanitized, we rebuild anything we had to take out. That start to finish approach is part of our full water damage restoration services, so one crew carries the job from cleanup through repair.
